CAIDA Backscatter Data Request Form

-----summary of contents-----
Backscatter data is available for use by academic researchers and US government agencies. The dataset is also available for corporate entities (including corporate researchers) who participate in CAIDA's membership program. Information on membership levels, services, and rates is found on the CAIDA Sponsorship Information page, or by emailing sponsorship@caida.org.

Please note this dataset contains response traffic from DDoS attack victims, not DDoS attack traffic.

Complete and submit the form below to request access to backscatter data. It will take about one week (on average) to process your request. Upon approval you will receive an email with instructions on how to download the data you requested. If you have any questions or problems using this form, please send email to data-info+backscatter@caida.org.

Please read the terms of the following Acceptable Use policy:
  1. Backscatter data will not be distributed beyond authorized users.
  2. I will notify CAIDA of the names and email addresses of any persons (and their respective affiliations) assisting me in research using the backscatter data. This includes graduate students and interns.
  3. I will not attempt to connect to, probe, or in any other way initiate contact with a machine or machine administrator identified via the backscatter data.
  4. In so far as possible, privacy of end users (hosts) and networks monitored by the network telescope will be respected by the researchers. Any publications will anonymize, aggregate or summarize IP addresses, network names, and domain names, as appropriate when the disclosure of such information may present a security risk to those organizations or the general Internet. In particular, any activity presumed to be legitimate traffic crossing the network telescope should not be used [1] or published. While the datasets have been filtered to remove as much legitimate traffic as possible, it is possible that a few packets remain.
  5. At the end of the research, or semi-annually (which ever is less), a summary of the research and any findings/conclusions will be reported to CAIDA. If any research is described on the WWW, a URL will be provided. This information is primarily used in reports to our funding agencies.
  6. All users who publish a document (including web pages and papers) using data from a backscatter dataset must provided CAIDA with a copy of the publication.
  7. All publications (including web pages and papers) using data from Backscatter Datasets must include a citation for each dataset. For example:

The CAIDA Backscatter-2007 Dataset - February 2007 - November 2007, Colleen Shannon, David Moore, and Emile Aben, http://www.caida.org/data/passive/backscatter_2007_dataset.xml.

For exact citation texts see the respective dataset webpages:
  8. Users are encouraged, but not required, to include the following attribution in the acknowledgements section of their document:

Support for Backscatter Datasets and the UCSD Network Telescope is provided by Cisco Systems, Limelight Networks, the US Department of Homeland Security, the National Science Foundation, DARPA, Digital Envoy, and CAIDA Members.

  9. All users who create a publicly available presentation using data from this dataset must provide CAIDA with a copy of the publication and must use the full name(s) of the dataset(s) ("The CAIDA Backscatter-TOCS Dataset", "The CAIDA Backscatter 2004-2005 Dataset", etc.) in the presentation. Users are further encouraged, but not required, to include the url(s) for the dataset(s) (http://www.caida.org/data/passive/backscatter_tocs_dataset.xml, http://www.caida.org/data/passive/backscatter_2004_2005.xml, etc.) in their presentation.

[1] Legitimate traffic is by definition not backscatter.

*I agree with the terms of this policy

CAIDA will do dataset related announcements, like the availability of a new datasets, on the data-announce@caida.org mailinglist.
