On April 15-16, 1999 CAIDA hosted an Internet Statistics and Metrics Analysis (ISMA) workshop focused on Network Visualization. The meeting intended to engage researchers and practitioners experienced in both the Visualization and Networking fields in discussions aimed at identifying:
- current priorities and areas of commonality in the visualization and network (research and operations) fields
- the kinds of visualizations that are most useful to specific networking groups - researchers, hardware/software vendors, ISPs, users
- areas for data aggregation and analysis that can enhance the utility of visualizations of networking data
- critical next steps associated with visualizing network topologies, connectivity, routing, performance, and other traffic data
Participation at the workshop was invitation-only based on individuals' current involvement in these topics. All participants were required to submit responses to the following items for review / approval by the Program Committee (ismaviz-pc@caida.org) as a prerequisite to attendance:
-
Biosketch - including name, affiliation, title and description of activities/accomplishments (relating to Internet statistics and metrics analysis and/or visualization)
-
Describe your current activities / future plans in the field of networking/visualization
-
Identify visualization tools that are or might be suitable for visualization of networking research data -- please comment on their strengths and/or weaknesses. (We are especially interested in hearing about tools that are not widely used, but have potential for these applications.)
[if you are willing to demo or make a presentation on any of these tools,
please identify and specify your space/equipment/network requirements]
-
Identify what you see as the past, present, and future of networking research needs relative to visualization.
- Identify relevant URLs covering tools or initiatives in this sector
The meeting was held at the Auditorium of the San Diego Supercomputer Center, on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. An agenda for the workshop is posted at http://www.caida.org/workshops/isma/9904/agenda.xml.
