Datasets: Monthly measurements by Merit from 1988 until 1992.
Hourly measurements at Surfnet in the Netherlands from 1994 by Erik-Jan Bos.
Hourly measurements at the edge of AS 1221 in Australia from 1997 by the author.
Results: Examines the various longer term trends visible within the characteristics of the Internet's BGP table, specifically: BGP table growth, AS number consumption, average prefix length of advertisements, prefix length distribution, aggregation and holes punched in aggregates, and address consumption. In addition, discusses the effects of multihoming, traffic engineering and an increasingly dense interconnectivity mesh on the BGP routing system.
