CAIDA Mattermost

CAIDA uses the CAIDA Mattermost as an internal chat and direct messaging system. There is also an External Mattermost used to quickly collaborate with external visitors and collaborators.

Note there are desktop and mobile apps for Mattermost available.

Documentation

  • General User Documentation
  • How to pin messages for everyone to see
  • How to flag messages for flagging messages for follow-up (only you see your flagged messages)
  • List of /slash commands
  • multi-person direct messages: The interface for this can be a bit confusing. To start a direct message with multiple people, go to the left side tool bar under DIRECT MESSAGES and click on the More... link. From there, you’ll see a list of every user across any Mattermost team. As you hover over a given account, on the right, you can click on a + sign to add them to the direct message. Clock on Go when you’re done selecting people.

Guidelines

New users: Setting your Account Settings -> General details

The Account Settings menu is accessible in the upper corner of the Mattermost interface.

  • Fill the Full Name field. This helps other people identify you.
  • Fill the Position field with a short string describing your role at CAIDA, and your supervisor, and your room number if space allows. e.g. " Webmaster Assistant w/ Alex “, " REU; Catalog dev; Bradley “, " Volunteer, QUINCE project w/ Ricky “. This gives context to let others recognize you better.

Asking for sysadmin support

When asking for support from the system administrator, please add the hashtag #support to the end of your request:

This will help the system administrator keep an eye on requests across multiple channels.

CAIDA Culture / Mattermost Etiquette

Mattermost built-in status indicators are not relied on at CAIDA due to poor visibility; instead the staff is encouraged to write status messages in the regular chat on Town Square to indicate availability. In the External Mattermost (e.g. REUs, visitors) don’t need to do this.

  • Use “@sdsc” on a line by itself to identify when you’re in the office. Others who work remotely will use “@home” or some variation to indicate they’re available but not physically in office.
  • Use “idle” on a line by itself to indicate when you’re away for a while, like at the end of the day.

Optional styles for Mattermost

Optional loadable stylesheets offer some extension-like customization or enhancement.
