About CAIDA

Founded in 1997, the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) conducts network research and builds research infrastructure to support large-scale data collection, curation, and data distribution to the scientific research community. CAIDA is based at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, located on the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla, CA.

Mission statement

CAIDA investigates practical and theoretical aspects of the Internet in order to:

  • provide macroscopic insights into Internet infrastructure, behavior, usage, and evolution,
  • foster a collaborative environment in which data can be acquired, analyzed, and (as appropriate) shared,
  • improve the integrity of the field of Internet science,
  • inform science, technology, and communications public policies.

CAIDA Annual Report

The CAIDA 2023 Annual Report describes research initiatives, project progress and results, data sets, tool development, publications, presentations, workshops, web site statistics, funding sources, and operating expenses.

See our annual reports page for older reports.

CAIDA Program Plan

The current CAIDA Program Plan provides a summary of CAIDA’s primary research goals and plans. Past program plans are archived for historical purposes.

Institutional Review Board (IRB) Approval Process

In compliance with federal, state and University policies regarding experimentation involving human subjects, CAIDA submitted and has had approved an application for a review of our research protocol by the federally registered campus In stitutional Review Board (IRB). The application for this IRB approval process covered the general traffic and other data analysis work we have done for the last 10 years, not including any research involving payload (which we define as anything past the TCP/IP header). Although we expected it to go to a full panel review, our application was given expedited review and received approval within 10 days.

About CAIDA Staff

CAIDA has hosted a number of visiting scholars and students over the years. The CAIDA Staff page recognizes current and emeritus members of CAIDA staff and visiting scholars.
