The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, part of the School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, is home to approximately 1000 undergraduate students, 300 graduate students and over 40 faculty members. In a recent, comprehensive survey conducted by the National Academy of Sciences, the graduate programs in the UCSD School of Engineering were ranked ninth in the country, and at UCSD overall were ranked tenth.
With the encouragement of the new Dean, Robert Conn, we launched a major research thrust in the area of Information Networks. We have recruited seven new faculty in this thrust (five in 1996 alone), and we expect to recruit another seven in the near future. Research activities in this area have coalesced around the new Center for Wireless Communications and two "Focused Research Initiatives" awarded by the Department of Defense, one for Wireless Multimedia Networking and the other for Photonic Imaging Networking.
- Rene Cruz - Researches communication networks, queuing systems, high speed switching systems, probabilistic algorithms, operations, and information theory
- Ramesh Rao - Researches network architecture, protocol design and performance analysis of ATM, wireless and computer networks for integrated, voice, data, control and multimedia service applications
