Anonymized Two-Way Traffic Packet Header Traces

CAIDA's Anonymized Two-Way Traffic dataset contains traces collected from high-speed monitors on a commercial backbone link. The data collection started in April 2024 to Present. These data are useful for research on the characteristics of Internet traffic, including application breakdown, security events, geographic and topological distribution, flow volume and duration.

For more data use cases, refer to the following list of publications that had used Anonymized Internet Traces 10G data collected between 2007 to 2019: [Link]

This dataset contains anonymized layer 1-4 packet headers of two-way passive traces captured on a 100 GB link between Los Angeles and San Jose.

Beginning in April 2024, we have been capturing a one-hour trace each month. To protect privacy, we strip all packet payloads after the layer 4 headers, and anonymize IP (v4 and v6) addresses with CryptoPan. The monthly data is provided in two separate files, one for each direction of traffic.

Traffic traces in this dataset are anonymized using CryptoPan prefix-preserving anonymization, implemented in traceanon from the libtrace tool suite. The anonymization key changes annually and is the same for all traces recorded during the same calendar year.

During capture, packets are truncated to remove all payload, retaining only header information. Packets with ICMP, ICMPv6, TCP, UDP, or SCTP headers will be truncated at the end of that header; all others will be truncated at the end of the IP or IPv6 header.

The Napatech network cards used to capture these traces provide timestamps with nanosecond precision. This precision is maintained for anonymized traces stored in pcap format.

The traces can be read with any software that reads the pcap (tcpdump) format, including the tcpdump, Wireshark, libtrace, and many others.
