4th CAIDA-WIDE Workshop

The fourth CAIDA/WIDE Workshop will be held on August 6-7, 2004 (by invitation only) in SDSC, La Jolla, CA. The main areas of the Workshop are: IPv6/IPv4 topology studies and DNS. It will also cover miscellaneous research and technical topics of mutual interest for CAIDA and WIDE participants.

Dates: August 6 (Fri) - 7 (Sat), 2004
Place: San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD, La Jolla, CA

Driving directions

CAIDA/WIDE Collaboration

The objectives of informal joint CAIDA/WIDE workshops are:
  • to discuss Internet measurement analysis activities going on in each organization;
  • to explore opportunities for joint collaboration on projects;
  • to continue data exchange.

    2. Duane Wessels, Is your caching resolver polluting the Internet? (presented at Sigcomm 2004)
    3. Nevil Brownlee, NeTraMet: Recent developments in a production measurement environment

    General discussion: future directions of DNS research and collaboration

    • automated day-to-day comparisons of DNS RTTs at several metering sites might provide a way to observe how stable the anycast root servers are (by spotting changes from one anycast server to another).
    • is it possible to decide whether a DNS request is to a top-level, second-level, etc. nameserver, by observing the sequence of DNS requests issued by a local cacheing nameserver? This would be a hard problem to solve, but the solution would facilitate metering ccTLD servers in NeTraMet.
    • can we get the WIDE NeTraMet meter(s) to post their data on the CAIDA web site? How could we make the DNS RTT web pages more useful?
    • update on IPv6 query type spikes seen at F-root.
    11:00-11:30 break

  • 11:30-14:00 Traffic monitoring and other research topics
    12:30-13:00 pizza lunch
    1. Akira Kato, t-lex: Tokyo Lambda EXchange www.t-lex.net
    2. David Moore, How to build a better netflow (presented at Sigcomm 2004)
    3. Seiichi Yamamoto, s-flow interop test report
    4. Colleen Shannon, Update on the Network Telescope project
    5. Marina Fomenkov, Update on the IMDC project
