Core AS Internet

Cooperative Assocation for Data Analysis (CAIDA)
San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC)
University of California, San Diego (UCSD)

URL: https://www.caida.org/projects/as-core/

This graph combines dimensions showing peering richness and geographic information, revealing the highly 'core-connected' nature of Autonomous Systems (ASes). Polar angles represent the longitude of the AS headquarters, enabling consideration of continental implications of AS richness.

Visualization Thumbnail About the Data
Data Sources:
(Source1): Bill Cheswick, 14 January 2000 http://www.cheswick.com/ches/map/gallery/index.html
(Source2): traceroutes from CAIDA network to Cheswick destinations, 15-22 January 2000
(Source3): 14 skitter data monitors on 8,16,24 January 2000
Data Specification:
(Data1): 220,533 IP addresses (nodes) (220,533 nodes, 374,013 links, and 154,104 target destination IP addresses.)
(Data2): BGP Routing Table of 16 Jan 2000, from the Oregon Route Views Project containing 75,643 total prefixes.
Data Aggregation:
(Aggregate1): IP addresses in 32,798 BGP prefixes were mapped to their best-match origin AS in the BGP Routing Tables, yielding 5,107 AS nodes. Each of these AS nodes approximately maps to an ISP.
(Aggregate2): Outdegree and indegree are calculated by breaking down the directional paths that skitter collects into their corresponding links. Then, counting the number of links that start in a given AS and end in another represents its outdegree. Likewise, the number of links starting elsewhere that end up in a given AS represent its indegree.
Data Filters:
(Filter1): Remove leaf nodes.
(Filter2): Remove nodes with an out-degree of zero.
(Filter3): Remove 2-loops (two nodes with outgoing edges connected only to each other.)

Visualization Thumbnail Evaluation
Strengths:
(Strength1): By combining peering richness and geographic information, this graph clearly reveals the highly connected nature of ASes. Of the top 15 ASes, 14 are based in the U.S., and one is based in Canada. While ISPs in Europe and Asia have many peering relationships with ISPs in the U.S. there are few links directly between ISPs in Asia and Europe.
Issues:
(Issue1): Each AS headquarters reflects an administrative home, not geographical location of actual infrastructure. (which is typically national or global).
(Issue2): Graph does not reflect current conditions. More studies are needed to determine an appropriate sampling rate. (CAIDA hopes to have a daily update available by December 2000.)
(Issue3): Graph only represents forward IP topology information, with IP addresses mapped to origin ASes using a BGP routing table. Other information about peering sessions is not reflected.
(Issue4): IP layer only, does not capture lower layer (e.g., ATM, physical fiber) information.
(Issue5): Graph doesn't address any performance or workload measurements, precluding comparison of ISPs in these dimensions.

Visualization Techniques:
(Technique1): Position of each AS is plotted in polar coordinates, position(radius, ) such that:
Key Visualization Mappings:
(Mapping1): Richer peering relationships are reflected by positions closer to the center of the graph.
(Mapping2): represents the geographic longitude of the AS headquarters. Colored arcs at the perimeter distinguish longitudes of different continents. Names of large cities are placed at their respective longitudinal positions.
(Mapping3): Link color reflects outdegree, from lowest (blue) to highest (yellow).
(Mapping4): Certain well-known ISPs have been manually labeled.
Visualization Tools:

(Tool2) Perl script by Brad Huffaker.
